You are standing in a Japanese supermarket with a bottle labeled 食器用洗剤 and a pouch labeled 食洗機用. Which one goes in your dishwasher? Check the intended use on the package: ordinary hand-washing liquid belongs at the sink, while a dishwasher needs detergent labeled for dishwashers. Using regular hand dish soap in the machine can produce excessive foam and cause trouble.
Labels to recognize
| Japanese | Reading | Meaning and what to check |
|---|---|---|
This term alone does not establish that it is suitable for a dishwasher; read the use instructions. |
| 台所用洗剤 | だいどころようせんざい (daidokoro-yō senzai) | Kitchen detergent, often for washing dishes by hand. Check the stated use. |
Look for this or an equivalent dishwasher designation. |
Follow both the product label and your machine’s manual. |
Follow the product’s directions for the task. |
| つめかえ用 | つめかえよう (tsumekae-yō) | Refill pack; check which original product it refills. |
If you prewash with hand soap, rinse away suds before loading. |
Choose the right product at the shelf
- Washing dishes in the sink? Read the product’s 用途 (ようと, intended use) and choose a hand-washing dish detergent. Follow its directions, including dilution or rinsing instructions where stated.
- Using a dishwasher? Look for 食洗機用 or 食器洗い乾燥機専用, then check your dishwasher manual for the compatible detergent type and amount. Dishwasher products can be powders, tablets, gels, or other forms; the package and machine instructions determine how to use yours.
- Buying a refill? Match the refill with the intended bottle and use. A familiar looking pouch is no substitute for checking the label.
Panasonic’s dishwasher detergent guidance says to use dedicated dishwasher detergent: regular kitchen liquid can create too much foam and may cause leakage or malfunction. Kao likewise warns against using hand dishwashing liquid in a dishwasher. The amount and loading method vary by detergent and appliance, so consult both labels.
If you used hand soap before loading the dishwasher
Remove food scraps as your machine instructs. If you hand-washed or prewashed with ordinary dish soap, rinse the soap off thoroughly before putting those dishes in the machine. Suds left on dishes can also create excess foam; see the Panasonic dishwasher manual for an example. Whether a detergent-free pre-rinse is necessary varies with your machine and detergent, so follow their instructions rather than assuming every load needs one.
If you have already put hand-washing liquid into the dishwasher, stop and consult your model’s manual or manufacturer support for the appropriate cleanup. Avoid adding more detergent or running another cycle to try to clear the foam.
Short Japanese questions you can use
Kore wa shokusenki-yō desu ka? — Is this for a dishwasher?
Tearai-yō no shokki-yō senzai o sagashite imasu. — I’m looking for dish detergent for washing by hand.
— Which detergent works with this dishwasher?
One more label distinction
中性 (ちゅうせい, neutral) and 弱アルカリ性 (じゃくアルカリせい, mildly alkaline) describe the product’s properties; neither phrase by itself tells you whether it belongs in a dishwasher. Read 用途 and the appliance manual. Do not treat a general kitchen cleaner as dish detergent either. For symbols and handling instructions on other household products, see our guide to Japanese cleaner warning labels.
