Japanese Bath Remote Buttons: Fill, Reheat, and Add Hot Water

The bathtub already has water in it, but the remote shows ふろ自動 and 追いだき. Which button should you press? Use ふろ自動 to fill a bath to the unit’s set level and temperature. Use 追いだき to reheat water already in the tub, if your system supports it and the water covers its circulation opening. Use たし湯 when you need more hot water. These controls vary by water heater and remote, so confirm the exact sequence in your model’s instructions.

給湯温度 and ふろ温度 may be separate settings. Do not assume changing one changes the other. A Paloma bathroom remote example has distinct controls for automatic filling, reheating, adding hot water, and the hot-water supply setting; its exact button behavior is specific to that model.

Starting with an empty bathtub

  1. Check that the tub is empty and clean. Close the drain plug securely. If your system requires the circulation filter or bath lid to be in place, check the manual.
  2. Turn 運転 on if needed. Check ふろ温度 and ふろ湯量 before starting. Begin at a comfortable setting and test the water before entering.
  3. Press ふろ自動 or the model’s お湯はり control. Wait for its completion signal. Check the actual level and temperature before bathing.
  4. If the remote continues 保温 after filling and you do not want it to do so, stop the automatic operation as your manual directs. Turning off only a screen backlight may not stop the heating program.

Warming a bath that already has water

For 追いだき, check that water is above the circulation adapter or the upper opening specified by your system. Noritz’s model instructions explicitly require water above that opening for reheating. Some units cannot reheat at all, and some stop with an error if the filter is clogged. The temperature reached and whether the unit then keeps the bath warm vary by model.

If the tub needs more water, use たし湯 according to its displayed amount. Avoid guessing that ふろ自動 will top up a partly filled bath: Noritz explains that some automatic-fill systems can misjudge residual water and even overfill when the water is below the circulation opening. Its guidance for certain auto-type systems is to add water with たし湯 and then reheat. Check your own unit’s type and instructions before applying that sequence.

If a button seems unresponsive

Some remotes dim or turn off their displays to save power. Noritz notes that a first press may only wake the display for certain buttons and configurations. Check whether the remote is on, whether a lock is active, and whether an error code is shown. Do not keep pressing buttons without checking the screen: a second press may start or cancel a function. Note the model and code, then contact the landlord, property manager, or manufacturer support if the manual’s basic steps do not resolve it.

Useful phrases: 追いだきの使い方を教えてください。 (Oidaki no tsukaikata o oshiete kudasai. — Please show me how to reheat the bath.) ふろ自動と給湯温度は別ですか? (Furo jidō to kyūtō ondo wa betsu desu ka? — Are the automatic bath and hot-water supply temperatures separate?) エラー番号が出ています。 (Erā bangō ga dete imasu. — An error number is displayed.)

A bath remote is different from an air-conditioner control; for room temperature buttons, see our Japanese air-conditioner remote guide. The same practical habit helps: take a photo of the model number and consult that device’s manual.
